How to Stop Smoking:
Regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke a day you are damaging your health and if you can’t stop then its a habit! Most people when asked why they smoke often respond “I enjoy smoking” And when asked how many of that 20 or 40 cigarettes that you smoke every day do you enjoy? They often answer probably less than half. Smoking weakens the immune system leading to ill health. Some spend thousands of pounds, or dollars each year on smoking probably taking 5-10 years off your life. It’s a very common belief that nicotine is addictive. Would it surprise you to learn that nicotine is not addictive.
A study by top chemists and scientists in the USA commissioned by the government produced a report that found nicotine to be non addictive. And when you compare nicotine to something that is addictive, like cocaine, someone trying to give that up becomes sick, nauseous, often has hallucinations. Compare that to someone trying to give up cigarettes, they might get a bit bad tempered, but they don’t get any physical symptoms. Often friends who themselves smoke will make up excuses why they continue but what they are really doing is attempting to justify their own lack of willpower. They will tell you that nicotine is addictive because of the nicotine in cigarettes, but it is not addictive.
So what is it? It’s a habit, plain and simple. It might seem a little trivial to say it’s just a habit, but it’s probably one of the most powerful habits there is.
How can hypnotherapy stop you smoking and does it work?
Firstly you have to want to stop. Because contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not mind control. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition, but when in it, the patient is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist’s voice. Hypnosis makes you more aware of every action involved in smoking from first taking the pack out of your pocket or purse, to opening it, taking out a cigarette, putting it in your mouth, taking out a match or a lighter, lighting it, and taking that first inhalation. And by so doing you gain more control over your actions, because it is no longer a subconscious automatic action.
Suggestions, ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations are put to the subject without the interference of the rational, questioning, analytical side of the brain.
